On Saturday, March 23rd the Dan Kostel Recreation Center held is 51st Annual Ice Show, titled Cinema Skates.

Having the show just one day brought a crowd of over 300 in attendance.  All skaters performed to movies directed by MGM, Walt Disney Studio’s, Dreamworks, Liongate, Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Studios and Fox Productions.  Some of the group number titles were, Ghostbusters, Bettlejuice, The Greatest Showman, Bring it On, Shrek, and American Graffiti.

Soloists skated to songs from the movies:   Pochahontas,  La La Land, Annie, Singing in the Rain, Rocky, A Star is Born, Dirty Dancing and Moulin Rouge.

We are so proud of our own Garfield Heights resident, Katie McBeath who this year was on Team USA for US Figure Skating competing at the Ondrej Nepala Trophy in Bratislava Slovakia.  She is a five time Sectional Medalist, five time National Competitor, and 2017 Collegiate National Champion.  Katie started right here on Saturdays in our Learn to Skate Program.  Katie was our Guest Skater for this ice show skating a solo to “Come Fly with Me”.

Our Senior skater Julia Milosevic, also began her career her at an early age, and also taught lessons here for the last 2 years.  Julia’s solo performance was appropriately skated to “I had time of my life” from Dirty Dancing!

Julia currently attends Cuyahoga Community College full time as a College Credit Plus student. She has been skating for ten years and has successfuylly participated in different competitions.

Winning the 2017 Mayor’s Trophy Award and qualifying for competing in Showcase Nationals were the highlights of her skating career.  Julia gives credit to our Head Skating Pro, Holly Gray and to her coach Nikki Majka.

Julia will be graduating from Brecksville/Broadview Heights High School and will attend Bowling Green University in the fall to pursue a degree in Speech and Communication Disorders.

Good Luck Julia in all you do!

We would also like to Congratulate this year’s Mayor’s Trophy Winner, Miss Azlan Smith who’s solo performance was to “Annie

Azlan is a 14 year old eight grader who resides in Garfield Heights, and attends Garfield Heights Middle School.  She is the daughter of Dan and Shannon Smith of Garfield Heights.  When Azlan was seven years old she was registered for the Learn to Skate program and has been skating ever since.

Azlan loves being on the ice and has two brothers, Zion (15) and Journey (11) who love to cheer her on every time she gets on the ice.

In the future, Azlan would love to coach younger children, perform in Disney on Ice, and become a teacher or nurse.

When she’s not skating Azlan can be found volunteering at Momentum Church, playing with her big dog, Sully, studying for tests, or hanging out with her family and friends.

Mark your calendars for next years 52nd Annual Ice Show scheduled for the last weekend in March – this 52nd show…will be “something Magical”.
