*Fire Hydrant Flushing and Inspection
On Monday, April 25, 2022, The Garfield Heights Fire Department will begin the annual flushing and inspection of the 1,300 fire hydrants in the City. The work will be performed Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., depending on the weather. It should take about 8 weeks to complete. The work will begin in Ward 1 and end in Ward 7. Some residents may experience rusty water, which is normal. Residents are encouraged to check to see if their water is rusty before drinking, doing laundry or using it to cook. If it is rusty, do not use any water, including flushing toilets, for one hour. After an hour, start at the lowest level of the home (laundry tub) and turn on cold water until it runs clear. Turn water off and proceed to the next level of the home and follow the same steps until each level flows clear. In the event that clothes were laundered and are discolored, do not dry them. Rewash them immediately after your water is clear, using a heavy-duty detergent. Do not use chlorine bleach. If the rust has not been removed, a commercial rust remover should do the trick. Should you have any questions, please call Sandy at the Garfield Heights Fire Department, 216-475-4053.
