52nd Ice Skating Show

“Magical Moments on Ice” returned to the Dan Kostel Recreation Center March 27, 2021. The 52nd Ice Show is the culmination of the Garfield Heights Parks and Recreation Learn to Skate program. The 2020 show was abruptly cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus lockdown. This year’s show had no spectators, but the staff felt it was important for students to be able to showcase their hard work. The ice show was live-streamed so that parents could watch.

The annual Mayor’s Trophy Award went to Savana Irvine. The 14-year-old is the daughter of Mike and Melissa Irvine. She is a freshman at Garfield Heights High School where she plays soccer and softball. Savana is coached by Nikki Majka. The Mayor’s Trophy Award is given to someone who is a team player, has a positive attitude, is willing to try new skills, show great improvement and has a strong dedication and love for the sport of Figure Skating.

The Robert A. Dobies, Sr. Memorial Bulldog Award was presented to Laney Karpowicz for Figure Skating and Kia and Kellen Fabian for Youth Hockey. This inaugural award is given in honor of the late Robert A. Dobies, Sr., recent past director of the Parks and Recreation Department, to a skater who is a team player, demonstrates a positive attitude, improvement and dedication to their sport. Laney is a junior at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School where she also plays softball and runs track and is an honor student. She is coached by Holly Gray. Kia and Kellen are 8-year-old twins who attend Echo Hills Elementary School in Stow. The skaters came to Garfield Heights when their home arena in Kent closed due to the pandemic. Kia and Kellen were in the Bulldog Mites coached by Harry Regan.
