Mayor Matt Burke was born on February 4, 1970 in Warren Ohio. His family moved to Garfield Hts. in 1978 and lived in an apartment right behind what is known as “Carlo’s Barbershop” today. About a year later his family moved to Granger Rd. in Garfield Hts. where he currently resides after buying the house from his parents in 1994. He is a 1988 Graduate of Garfield Hts. High School and has proudly served in the United States Army Reserve.
Matt Burke started his professional career in the Floor Covering Industry in 1986 working as a Stockperson at Colortile Home Improvement Supermarkets which was located on Turney Road inside Turneytown Shopping center. Over the course of his 34-year career, Matt represented multiple manufacturers of quality floorcoverings. Armstrong, Mannington, Congoleum, Shaw, and Mohawk to name a few.
In 2013 Matt was elected to serve on City Council as a representative for Ward 6. After 2 terms he was nominated and elected by his peers as Council President where he served the residents until February 1, 2021 when he left his floor-covering career to answer the call and serve the residents as the Mayor. Mayor Collova had decided to retire from office before his term had expired and Matt followed the Charter of The City of Garfield Hts. and moved into the position, where he currently serves as the very first Asian American Mayor in Garfield Hts.
Throughout his life, Mayor Burke has served and supported many organizations such as The Garfield Hts. Baseball League (2008 – 2010), The Northeast Ohio Floor Covering Association, The Garfield Hts Democratic Club PAC, The Kiwanis Club, Food for The Hungry, St. Jude, The First Suburbs Consortium, The Cuyahoga County Mayors and Managers Association, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District Council of Governments, The Cleveland Zoo, and more.
Mayor Burke is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys bicycling, hiking, fishing and hunting. Matt has a passion for our National Parks. He is a huge fan of The Cleveland Browns, The Cavaliers, and The Cleveland Indians (Guardians). He enjoys watching college football and is equally a fan of both The Ohio State Buckeyes and The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Matt has two children and two Grandchildren!
